What Is Supima® Cotton And Why It Makes a Better T-Shirt?
Most T-shirts feel fine on day one. Supima® is about how they feel after two years.

The word cotton tells you very little. It covers everything from the cheap single-use jersey that pills after three washes to the fabric that gets softer with every wear and holds its shape and colour for years. The difference is in the fibre, specifically its length. Supima® cotton has some of the longest fibres in the world. That is why it performs differently, and why less than 1% of global cotton production qualifies for the designation.
When we decided to make a T-shirt at Uniform Standard, the cotton was the first decision. Everything followed from it.
What is Supima® cotton?
Supima® is a trademarked designation for extra-long staple cotton grown exclusively in the USA. It is traceable and every product carrying the Supima® name can be verified back through the supply chain to the farms where the cotton was grown. That traceability matters. It is what separates Supima® from generic claims about cotton quality that are difficult to verify.
The fibres themselves are typically twice the length of standard cotton. Longer fibres produce a finer, stronger yarn with a smoother surface. The result is a fabric that is softer to the touch, more resistant to pilling, and better at holding dye which means colour that stays true wash after wash rather than fading progressively toward grey.

Supima® vs Pima vs standard cotton
Pima cotton is also extra-long staple and is grown in several countries including Peru, Australia and the USA. It is a good fibre. But Pima is a generic term with no single certification body controlling its use. Supima® is the American-grown, licensed subset of Pima, with supply chain oversight that Pima alone does not guarantee.
Standard cotton
Short-staple fibres produce a coarser yarn. Prone to pilling, shrinkage and colour fade. The T-shirt you replace every year.
Pima cotton
Extra-long staple, grown across multiple countries. A meaningful step up from standard cotton, but without a single controlling certification.
Supima® cotton
Extra-long staple, grown exclusively in the USA, licensed and fully traceable. Less than 1% of global cotton production. The fibre we use.
Why 170gsm?
Weight matters as much as fibre. Too light and a T-shirt becomes translucent and loses structure. Too heavy and it stops draping properly and feels more like a sweatshirt than a T-shirt. 170gsm compact single jersey sits in the range where all three qualities of drape, durability and structure are balanced. It is substantial enough to hold its shape, light enough to wear in any season.
We custom knit and dye the yarn ourselves into this construction. That control over the process is what allows us to specify the exact weight and finish rather than working with whatever a supplier has in stock.
How we make it
The Uniform Standard Mens Supima® Cotton T-Shirt is handcrafted in Portugal in a standard fit - not oversized, not slim. It's designed to work with everything in the range and beyond it. is pre-washed to minimise shrinkage before it reaches you, and reinforced with shoulder tape so the T-shirt holds its shape over time.
It's a T-shirt made to be worn daily and last for years.

"Less than 1% of global cotton production qualifies as Supima®. The difference is immediately apparent and compounds over time."
